The Fascia
Common questions about the connective tissue that holds us together and how we treat it.
The Old Explanation:
"Thin layer around a muscle like what you see on a piece of meat. Goes in line with the old idea of a divided body, where fascia is what separates different parts and layers from each other."
The New Explanation:
Fascia is ONE system, without beginning and end that maintains interconnection, communication and interaction between different parts of the body.
If you've ever put on a tight pair of pants—I'm talking about the ones where if you squat down too low, you're afraid they might rip—imagine the feeling of constriction.
This is what happens when your fascia is tight. Just like with a tight pair of pants, your movement is severely limited, tight fascia leads to a stiffer body.
Even deep tissue massage doesn't address deep fascia. The technique I use requires far more patience and precision. In a 90 minute session we can work on a couple of areas that are all interconnected. With massage, the practitioner is often doing the same routine on 6-8 clients throughout the day. In addition, I am far less susceptible to burnout of injury of my body which means better results for you.
There are amazing chiropractic practitioners out there. Unfortunately, the model for the mass chiropractic model is revolving door. I see many clients that have been going to chiropractors for years and have to keep going back. If the same issue keeps coming up it means the structural root cause of the problem isn't being addressed.
Rolfing is a different technique with a different system. My maestro Edu Gomez trained with the Rolfing institute but created a more intuitive approach that doesn't require a specific timeline/10 hr series. The technique I utilize is far more personalized to your needs and is in no way cookie cutter.
Ultimately, clients feel a tremendous amount of relief. I often hear things like: "I never knew I was in that much pain" or, "I always wanted someone to release this but no one could reach the area." At the end of the day, this technique will connect you more to yourself and your body which is the end goal. The more connected you become, the more free. There is a laundry list of other benefits. I'll let you experience them for yourself :)
If you are in an immense amount of pain, I would not be doing the technique correctly. Many clients say: "Its very intense but not painful." Or, "Its not necessarily comfortable but very relieving." I will teach breathing techniques and guide you along the way to support the process. ALSO: your body is never going to let me start on the most intense area. I can only begin where I am welcome. Through time we unwind area after area.
Nothing fancy needed. Hydrate yourself the day before. Avoid coffee/caffeine the day of. You'll be able to go into parasympathetic (a restful state) far easier without it. An open mind and curiosity are essential as they facilitate better results.
Spend the day feeling into your body. Drink a lot of high quality water such as Icelandic. DO NOT go to the gym and do heavy exercise. You will get best results by walking, feeling into your body and moving very slow. Your body will try to go back into old patterns. This is where the real work is done and prevents you from having to come back more.
Structure leads to better function ↔ Better function leads to better structure.
There are of course very specific conditions this might not support and in that case I will refer you out. Other than that, opening up the fascia will change the way you breathe, walk, and show up in the world. And since we view the body as one functioning unit, any support in improving structure and function means better health for your body and any conditions you're experiencing.
